“…guided by Chinese crafstmanship - metal and woodwork - and symbols used in ceramics and paintings. The calligraphy is guided by research into historical brushwork [with input from Yang's mom, a Chinese calligraphy enthusiast]. Held inside a Chinese-style frame are three symbols: the single magpie, the willow, and the moon. The magpie is a symbol of happiness and a harbinger of joy, and is alone, looking for collaborators. The willow is a strong but gentle protective symbol of safety and belonging, and was chosen for its association with the water and the moon. The calligraphy is held inside the moon… Their name 泱 means a body of water so great that its bounds are imperceptible, and they are also Piscean.”
